June 30 Bad News and Good News

Yesterday the front page of The NY Times said, "The Earth's Axis is Shifting, and We're the Reason."

"Groundwater Pumping is Factor in Altering the Planet's Spin"

Did you know that the Earth wobbles on its axis like "a badly thrown Frisbee?" 

Yikes! And OY!  How in the world have we gotten to this state and how in the world do we fix it?

I have no idea, so I'll just look for something to feel good about. Here's something;


A new tree on Washington Street!  The crew was very nice when I thanked them, and one of them held my coffee cup and Russell's leash while I took this shot. Trees do a great job of removing carbon from our air, so let's thank them and take good care of them.

More good news!  A perfect game pitched by a Yankee! Congratulations to Domingo German.


This is Yogi Berra and Don Larson celebrating the only perfect game pitched in a World Series Game.
David Welles pitched a perfect game on my birthday a few years ago. It's a great achievement but I'm afraid I always feel bad for the other team.

My personal good news is that I can finally say FINI to several drawings that have been lurking around my studio since January.

but enough about me. Here's good news from a perfect stranger.  As I was walking on Greenwich Avenue this week I saw a couple sitting on a bench outside the wonderful bakery, Mah-ze-Dahr.  The man was coughing violently and I noticed a cigarillo in his hand.  Should I say something? 

I caught his eye and said, "You've gotta quit smoking!"  He jumped up and said, 

"Let me tell you something about my life. Ten years ago I was using drugs, homeless, no job, no money, no nothing.  Then I met this woman," he nodded toward his companion who did not smile, "and turned my life around.  Now I'm working, I've got money, I'm married--smoking's the only sin I got left."

What could I say to that? I thanked him for sharing and asked if I could take a selfie.


I still think he should quit smoking.

    Love newly finished work. QE is a remarkable reflection of Sondra Radvanovsky’s QE portrayal in Roberto Devereux at the Met. At the curtain call
    she rose from the opera’s death bed, flung her wig to the side, marched forward to the stage front to a standing audience ovation and realized she had just performed the role of a lifetime.     Well, YES...he should quit smoking! But what I really liked was his dashiki!!! Remember when they were such a hit in the early 70's?? I had found a multi-colored dashiki dress in some little store in Burlington and wore it endlessly. I thought I was so "hep"! Nice to know they have withstood the test of time.. as has tie-dye! (hmmm...not sure if that's good or bad...)

 Good Morning!  I was thinking about posting a reprise of an old post about PINK, to keep the Barbie vibe going; I understand that in London they've painted all the red telephone booths pink and the great Ferris wheel has pink lights in honor of Her Plasticness but I had a better idea--you could say the Sun came up! You know I have a granddaughter named Sunny, right? I wanted to do a drawing for her and what else could I start with? The Sun and sunflowers--not very original but she's two and a half--to her everything's new and it's her name! Filling in the sky I see that it looks like the way I draw water, but that's OK.  I added Batchelor Buttons beneath the Sunflowers and I like the way the blue makes the yellow pop.  I'm not sure how to handle the transition from flowers to sky so I won't think about it.  Remember Mickey Rivers; "I don't worry about what I can control because if I can control it why worry?" Oh, Russell

 I have to teach Russell that when I say, "I just devoured that book!" I don't mean it literally. However, I must admit that he has a discerning eye, and has brought some forgotten favorites back to my attention, like this -- Art Nouveau  by Martin Battersley, from The Color Library of Art.     Here is Symbolist poet Robert de Montesquiou, an aristocrat and a dandy, the original of Proust's Baron de Charlus. I placed him with this Barbie because she has a Belle Epoque kind of vibe.  The painter is Giovanni Boldini 1842-1931. "He fascinated his sitters by his method of painting, gazing at them intently as though to draw out their inmost secrets and then attacking the canvas with long brushes held at arm's length. Summer Reading

What are you Reading?  I love it when someone asks me that. The Times Book Review has a column that asks what's on your night table?  Does everybody read in bed?  If I have a good book I can't wait to say good-night. But as reading and writing has made me focus on language an abyss of bad grammar has opened before   me and I cry out in anguish. Will I ever become inured to hearing Ivy League graduates on NPR saying, "Him and Me are gonna..." and "Please reach out to John or I?" Terry Gross never corrects anyone's grammar and I respect  that,  it's not a good interviewing technique,  but where are the mothers and teachers?  How has it come to this? And another thing! The misplaced modifier!   In a biography of Willa Cather I read, "At the age of eight, school began to bore Willa."  Really?
